Okay, but what’s the catch

Fair question. Free AI tools usually mean you are the product, or the free part evaporates the moment you rely on it. So here is exactly how this one is paid for.

OutRung is lucky enough to be backed by the Microsoft for Startups programme, which absorbs the compute costs behind the AI work. The scoring, the CV generation, the cover letters, all of that runs on someone else’s bill right now. I am not quietly burning savings and waiting to spring an invoice on you.

And honestly, the sponsorship is only half the answer. The other half is that in 2026, getting anyone to even look at a new tool is harder than building the thing. People are drowning in products shouting for attention. I have poured months of evenings into OutRung, and the worst outcome is not losing money on compute. It is all that work sitting unused behind a paywall while the people it was built for never find out whether it helps. I would rather it helped someone and came back to me as feedback that makes it better.

The only guardrail is a fair-use cap, and it exists to stop scripts, not people. If you are scoring roles and generating CVs the way an actual job hunt works, over days and weeks, you will never meet it. If you somehow do, it resets on the next window.

And the future

For the foreseeable future, nothing changes. My costs are covered by the Microsoft programme, and this model holds.

If OutRung ever gets lucky enough to land serious traction, and I mean a genuinely massive hit, not a good month, then other funding or some form of monetisation would get considered. If that day comes, you will hear it from me directly, with notice, not by logging in to find a paywall where your CV used to be. Realistically though, that is not the world we are in, and I am not planning around it.
